From Spark to Skein
In the spring of 2023, an unexpected idea took root during a conversation with friends from Chicago Fair Trade knitting group. What began as a casual suggestion—that naturally dyeing yarn could be both cost-effective and creatively fulfilling—quickly sparked something much bigger. It opened the door to a new way of thinking about craft, livelihood, and possibility.
Motivated by curiosity, Manvee Vaid, a board member of Himalayan Education Board, began reaching out to local yarn shop owners to better understand the potential of this idea. Their encouragement affirmed that this was a path worth exploring. With that momentum, she turned to the Himalayan Education Foundation board, sharing a vision of how Himalayan Naari could expand into natural dyeing—not only as a craft, but as a sustainable livelihood opportunity for the women artisans.
From there, the journey unfolded step by step. With support from the Himalayan Education Foundation, the basement of the Naari building in Chaukori a small rural village was completed, and essential infrastructure—including a water system with assistance from India Development Service—was put in place. A pivotal moment came when Thistle Farms partnered to sponsor a training program, enabling local women to participate in an intensive 12-day workshop led by a respected natural dye expert.
This support made it possible to invest in materials, professional training, and people—welcoming four skilled women into the Himalayan Naari family.
Lofty Peaks Yarn emerged from this shared vision and collective effort. Today, it offers a curated palette of naturally dyed hues in both Merino and Himalayan wool.
What began as a simple conversation in Chicago has since created a meaningful ripple effect across the world—reaching a small village in North India, where it is helping revive the traditional, and once-forgotten, craft of natural dyeing. In doing so, it has forged a path not only for sustainable livelihoods, but for renewed purpose, passion, and lasting impact within the community.
